One-fifth of the world’s disabled, over 83 million, live in this country. Living largely invisible lives, they face challenges prevalent in many societies: stigmatization and lack of accommodation. Many disabled people spend their lives in orphanages and other institutions. While gender was a frequent factor in child abandonment in the past, now as many as 98% of the overall population are literate, less that 60% of the disabled are.
